With the exhibition Evermore, Mono Art Space presents an installation-based retrospective dedicated to the American artist Winston Roeth (born 1945 in Chicago). The most comprehensive solo presentation of the artist’s work in Switzerland to date brings together around twenty works including several multi-part pieces, offering insight into the major bodies of work within his oeuvre.
Colour functions as the medium, form and content of Winston Roeth’s painting. In his works, he explores the interplay of colour, shape, line and surface, allowing each composition to develop its own visual rhythm.
The clear, concentrated fields of colour emerge through a process of continuous painting and overpainting. Working on natural supports such as slate and wood, as well as on Dibond, Roeth creates surfaces that range from matt and almost velvety to glossy and reflective.
Roeth’s focus on specific painterly questions, such as the handling of paint on the canvas and the limits and spatial presence of the picture, directs attention towards perception itself and gives rise to distinct visual experiences.
